LuLu Retail
LuLu Retail is looking for an experienced Software Development Engineer 3 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
This full-time senior backend role sits in the Customer Applications squad. LuLu is building a high-traffic, multi-region e-commerce platform. The engineer owns systems that customers use after they sign up, including identity, account management, order tracking and refunds. The work affects trust, retention and lifetime value.
About the role
This is an SDE 3 / senior engineering role with 7–10 years of experience. The engineer decides how systems are built, owns multi-quarter goals across teams and sets the technical standard. The squad’s core services are Identity Services, Your Account, Order Tracking and Refunds.
Key Responsibilities
Design and build identity services covering authentication, authorisation, session management and SSO using OAuth 2.0 and JWT.
Develop and maintain account-management APIs for profile updates, preferences, address book and communication settings.
Build real-time order-tracking services that combine warehouse, transport and delivery updates into one customer view.
Architect the refunds platform, including return eligibility, refund calculations, payment reversals and wallet credits across payment methods.
Implement secure, fast APIs that protect customer PII while still allowing personalised experiences.
Coordinate across teams so order-lifecycle events move cleanly from checkout to delivery and post-order support.
Keep observability strong with structured logging, customer-journey tracing and alerts when the experience drops.
Own multi-quarter product or platform goals and define technical solutions that raise the whole team’s level.
Make independent technical decisions when requirements are open-ended, using business and customer context.
Drive work across teams and disciplines, not only inside one squad.
Design software in the area of ownership so it meets current goals and longer-term business needs.
Handle complex modules that are dense because of business rules, idempotence, robustness or scale.
Simplify code and infrastructure where that cuts maintenance and migration cost.
Spot technical risk early and resolve cross-team dependencies before they block delivery.
Debug non-deterministic production issues that less experienced engineers often miss.
Use AI tools as a normal part of engineering work to speed delivery.
Set the technical roadmap for complex projects and hold quality through code and design reviews.
Coach teammates and help set an inclusive engineering culture.
Who this role is suitable for
This role suits a senior backend engineer who has already run microservices in production at scale and understands e-commerce or another high-traffic consumer domain, not only the tech stack.
Qualifications & Requirements
7–10 years of relevant engineering experience.
Strong proficiency in at least one backend language: Python, Java or Node.js, including language internals and performance.
Proven work designing, building and operating microservices at production scale.
Deep cloud experience on GCP, AWS or Azure, including architecture, cost and multi-region deployments.
Expert-level Docker and Kubernetes in production.
Strong CI/CD experience, including blue-green or canary deployments and automated quality gates.
Advanced database skills: query optimisation, sharding, replication and high-throughput data modelling.
Extensive event-driven architecture experience with Kafka, SQS/SNS or Pub/Sub at scale.
Deep understanding of caching with Redis, Memcached or CDN.
Strong grasp of API security, OAuth 2.0, JWT, API-gateway patterns and WAF.
Domain experience in e-commerce, retail, logistics, supply chain or similar high-traffic consumer platforms.
Useful extras: technical design reviews and ADRs, large migrations or re-architecture, observability at scale, and infrastructure-as-code such as Terraform or Pulumi.
